Although still an art, screen printing and stenciling has recently made considerable technological advances, and the main emphasis of the book is on the general trends of trade practice and on the many allied processes that have been developed.
The author, a lecturer at the London School of Printing, follows his introductory history of stenciling and screen printing with detailed descriptions of equipment, accessories and processes, reproducing at the same time, where appropriate, the manufacturer’s instructions-to make a really complete as well as compact handbook.
He discusses the virtues of the different mesh materials, printing inks, papers and boards; considers the techniques necessary for knife-cut stencils and the scope of hand drawn and photographic stencils; advocates the use of serigraphy (as it is also called) to reproduce halftone prints, giving details of the preparation of artwork for printing. The description of manual and machine processes is accompanied by specifications of screen printing machines available, followed by chapters on industrial applications and the estimating for quotations and cost control.
The contents of the fourteen chapters have been so arranged that continuous reading of specific aspects of screen printing is possible, and the nine full appendices include a list of suppliers, standards specifications and much other valuable information.
